For good measure, I lock my bedroom door behind me. No one will bother me with the lock—and so I begin the dreaded task of washing off my maskings in the shower.

Once wrapped up in my fluffy PJs, I pack, check my suitcases, pack again, over and over, while sipping on bloodbags from my mini-fridge. I let my waves dry in the towel that’s wrapped around my hair as I count the flasks of Pegasi Powder in my travel bag. I’m not a great fan of the powder, given that it stings after a few days of wear and makes me so hungry that I border on ravenous, but it’s the best product for my skin whitening that’s available.

Father buys it for me. Maybe from River, I don’t know.

Either way, he gets it from a black market, the rarest of sorts, and I only use my supply for my time at the Moon Academy. Means I don’t need to wash all the paint off before bed all the time and reapply when I wake.

I leave a flask out for before I leave for the Academy. I’ll need to use it when I get ready, and that’ll keep me disguised for a few days, or even a week.

Mm.

And now that I’m packed and prepared—

I’m left with nothing to do but to wander around my room.

I kill hours like this: Drinking from bloodbags, running my toes over the fluff of my shaggy rugs, eyeing up myself in mirrors I wander across, but mostly standing at the doors to the balcony, looking out at the gardens—where Mother keeps her pets. A couple of tigers from the human world, some bears. She’s something of a collector.

I wonder what my hobby will be when I’m married to an Ancient Vampire noble, and all of my identity is stolen away by him.

I wonder if, like Mother, I’ll strike luck and marry a noble who loves me. Or … be stuck in a marriage like Addie’s mother—with an Ancient almost as cruel as the likes of Samael.

Perhaps, even, I’ll become a piece of furniture in the home. I’ll be forgotten, ignored.

I do envy the Fae sometimes. A freedom available to them that I will never know. No hierarchy, arranged marriages, nothing but love and freedom and fun.

Guess that’s why I like the Academy so much. It’s the only place in the world I can taste that Fae life—even just a little. It’s a taste to savour for life.
